On 23rd January, the Welsh Government published a white paper titled “Securing Wales’ Future – Transition from the European Union to a new relationship with Europe”.
Social and environmental protections and values are recognised as one of the six key areas that need to be addressed in the negotiations. The UK joined the EU in 1973, and since that time the environmental legislation which has been the backbone of our work as ecological consultants has been developed and refined. In the short term, EU legislation relating to environmental protection will be preserved through the “Great Repeal Bill”. The white paper states that the Welsh Government is “committed… at minimum, to maintain current standards in respect of air and water quality emissions and environmental protection”. We hope that this will lead to continued protection for our wildlife and natural resources in the future.
