Early this month Thomson’s fisheries scientists carried out a fish stock assessment via the netting of a pond, located within the grounds of an industrial site which is currently undergoing redevelopment.
Rather than moving the fish into a local water-body and risk introducing disease, the developer had commission Thomson to determine what fish were present and their overall condition. This was with a view to advising whether they should be relocated.
The team of Thomson scientists who netted the pond found the presence of several native species. These include healthy populations of both rudd and tench. Somewhat more unexpected was the presence of grass carp, a non-native species that would have been brought to this country through the ornamental trade. Several koi carp were also found.
Although these fish are impressive animals, and were found to be in generally good condition, their origin means they would pose a significant disease risk to fish in other water-bodies.
To successfully conclude the project, Thomson will continue to work closely with the developer to re-home the fish to domestic ornamental ponds. This outcome will mean that they will pose no threat to wider fish populations.
