Following the successful delivery of the great crested newt (GCN) mitigation works on the M1 junctions 19 to 16 smart motorway scheme, we were asked by our client, Costain-Galliford Try JV, to carry out vegetation clearance works, to facilitate further construction works on this scheme.
The M1 junctions 19 to J16 Smart Motorway programme is a £94.1m scheme and is part of Highways England’s Collaborative Delivery Framework. The works are focusing on providing much needed capacity by converting the M1 between junction 19 to16 into an ‘all lane running’ smart motorway. Smart motorways reduce congestion and improve journey time reliability by making the hard shoulder available as a traffic lane and using the latest technology to help smooth traffic flow, supporting the economy and facilitating economic growth.
Working closely with our client we have:
- Cleared one hectare of vegetation down to ground level, to facilitate further groundworks
- Fly-chipped arisings using a 6” tracked chipper
- And provided an ecological watching brief to supervise the clearance works, to ensure that the on-site ecology was protected, and that the works mitigation strategy was adhered to.
