The annual number of Environmental Statements submitted to district planning authorities in England between 2011 and 2013 hovered around 320-350, but in the year ending March 2014 the numbers rose to 441, up 37% on the previous year reflecting the recovery in the house-building market.
It is also interesting to look at the regional variations in EIA activity under the local planning system. In the year ending March 2014, 60% of English local authorities (LAs) did not receive a single ES, while a disproportionately large amount (54%) of ESs were submitted in the London and southern region. Scotland has also seen significant activity with 184 ESs submitted in 2013, but there were only 36 in Northern Ireland and 33 in Wales.
