Cable route GCN survey and mitigation works

Thomson Ecology and Thomson Habitats have been working together to assist our client J.Murphy & Sons ltd, a multi disciplinary civil engineering and building contractor, with the installation of over 7km of temporary amphibian fencing, and the installation of pitfall traps and refugia.

We are excluding great crested news (GCNs) from five separate areas of terrestrial habitat surrounding breeding ponds, along a 14.5km cable route. Thomson Ecology undertook surveys of nearly 50 ponds in 2012 to determine the locations of great crested newt breeding ponds on or near the cable route working width. The exclusion fencing will ensure that development can take place while protecting this European protected species from harm.

The cable route will take power from the Westermost Rough offshore wind farm to a sub-station in Preston, near Hull.

Prior to the fencing works, Thomson Habitats removed a number of hedgerows along the route to facilitate the installation of the cable. This hedgerow will be replanted once the cable has been installed.
