Thomson Environmental Consultants were engaged by Rockwool Group, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of insulation material, to understand the company’s impact on biodiversity and ecosystems at its sites across the globe in response to the recent EU Taxonomy directive.
What we did
Thomson carried out a data capture exercise to create a GIS based online map covering over 40 Rockwool sites across the globe, gathering information about each site related to age, stack heights, production etc.
Assessments were undertaken of the most appropriate area of impact or relevant buffer zone to use in analysis. The sites were then assessed against a wide range of biodiversity areas including the Natura 2000 network of protected areas, UNESCO World Heritage sites and Key Biodiversity Areas, as well as other locally protected areas dependent on the country the site was located in. A thorough literature review was also undertaken.
Each site was considered by our experts and RAG-rated with results reported per country in a substantial document. Each site was presented with a detailed map, assessment information and a recommendations. These recommendations included a number of sites that required further evaluation and the identification of sites for creation of a biodiversity action plan (BAP) aligned to the National Biodiversity Action Plans (NBAP) in the relevant country.
The Outcome
Thomson’s work aligned with Rockwool’s existing sustainability strategy and enabled them to demonstrate that their operations ‘Do No Significant Harm’ to the sensitive biodiversity areas either in or adjacent to their sites of operation. Crucially Rockwool Group recognise that this is not a ‘one off’ undertaking, but that the EU Taxonomy means continuing to protect and restore biodiversity and ecosystems within and near their operations. Thomson are delighted to be helping them understand and undertake this process.
