Dormouse surveys
(Parts of England and Wales only)
A survey to determine the presence or likely absence of dormice should be undertaken in all areas assessed as potential dormouse habitat, such as woodland, scrub and hedgerows within the known range of dormice.
Two dormice survey techniques can be used. Firstly, a search for dormouse-nibbled hazel nuts can be carried out between September and December. If this survey proves inconclusive, a second method can be undertaken: erecting dormouse nest tubes in suitable bushes (normally hazel) throughout the survey area between April and November.
A licence is required to use some dormouse survey techniques.
