Leading environmental consultancy, Thomson, has strengthened its offering to the market with the appointment of a new Director of EIA, Peter George. Peter brings 30 years’ experience of environmental consultancy, specialising in EIA and environmental planning. A Chartered Environmentalist and marine biologist by background, he joins Thomson from Capita where he led their national Environmental Planning team.
Peter has spent a large part of his career project managing EIA, SEA and other environmental projects across many different sectors, particularly infrastructure. Describing himself as an ‘environmental realist’ he adopts a pragmatic approach to dealing with issues to find the right balance between the competing needs of development and protecting the environment. Peter is also the current Chair of the Institute of Environmental Management & Assessment’s (IEMA) Impact Assessment Network steering group, where he is involved in leading the development of EIA guidance and best practice.
On taking up his new post, Peter said;
“Developing Thomson’s EIA practice given the current situation in the UK is going to be a huge challenge, but it also represents a fantastic opportunity to leverage the technical skills and innovative thinking within the business to help our clients deliver much needed new development and infrastructure. The use of remote technology and digital platforms will become the norm in EIA and I am confident Thomson can be at the forefront of developing new ways to work in this field.”
Commenting on Peter’s appointment, Nancy Thomson CEO and founder of Thomson said;
“It is a very exciting time for Thomson and its EIA practice. We have for a long time carried out various parts of environmental impact assessments, Peter’s arrival allows us to take this further and coordinate both a larger quantity and larger scale of EIAs for our clients. His leadership and client development skills are exceptional, and he will be a valuable asset for major infrastructure projects”.
